Effect of Cymbopogon Citratus Terpenoids against Bacterial Pathogens Causing Bovine Mastitis
نویسنده
چکیده
Phytochemical analysis of Cymbopogon citratus revealed presence of bioactive compounds such as alkaloids, flavonoids, saponins, tannins, phenols, terpenoids etc. Each of the bioactive compounds were estimated and isolated separately by solventsolvent extraction for methanolic and aqueous extracts of Cymbopogon citratus. Saponins content was higher in methanolic extracts of Cymbopogon citratus (23.64%). This was followed by terpenoids with highest of all in methanolic extracts (10.2%). Alkaloids were the least present. Isolated bioactive compounds from crude extracts were tested for antibacterial activity against pathogens causing Bovine mastitis such as Escherichia coli, Streptococcus uberi, Staphylococcus aureus, and Coagulase-negative staphylococcus aureus. Terpenoids from aqueous extracts of Cymbopogon citratus have shown antibacterial activity with highest zone of inhibition against E. coli (17mm) and least against E. coli and S. uberis (12mm) by methanolic extracts. Hence terpenoids is important bioactive compounds. Aqueous extracts revealed significant activity as compared to methanolic extracts.

Antimicrobial activity of essential oils against pathogens isolated from Bovine Mastitis
Treatments for bovine mastitis based on antibiotic therapy are not always effective which may lead to faults in recovery of diseased animals, selection of resistant bacteria and the presence of antimicrobial residues in milk. In this context the use of essential oils configures as an alternative to control mastitis pathogens in dairy cows because they have antibacterial action against gram-posi...

Background: In Benin Republic, the conservation of fermented fishes for a long time is difficult due to the contamination of fungi, which lead to its rapid degradation. This experiment was conducted to evaluate the effect of Cymbopogon citratus Essential Oil (EO) against Aspergillus species isolated from fermented fish samples. Methods: Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry was used to determin...

This research evaluated the antimicrobial effect of the clove (Syzygium aromaticum) and lemongrass (Cymbopogon citratus (DC.) Stapf.) essential oils (EOs) against Listeria monocytogenes ATCC 19117 growth added to bovine ground meat stored under refrigeration (5 ± 2 °C) for three days. The EOs, extracted by hydrodistillation and analyzed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS), were test...
